How a Yamaha MT-15 V2 Became Part of Our Friendship

Two friends, one showroom in Batamaloo, and a motorcycle that made the best years of our lives even better.

That day, I returned home after spending one of the most memorable days with my best friend, Zahid. Zahid and I have been friends for almost ten years, ever since the day his family moved here, to Batamaloo. We shared the same mohalla, and then travelled in the same van for most of our school years until Zahid bought his first motorcycle, a Yamaha MT-15 V2.

Where It All Started

I vividly remember the day we searched for “Yamaha near me” on Google after my father shared stories about the Yamaha RX100, which, in his youth, represented freedom, speed, and style for an entire generation. The next day, we began convincing his father, Majeed Uncle, to buy him one.

This was honestly the hardest part, but the daily commute between Rajbagh and Batamaloo, regular trips to school, and years of proving himself responsible all played a part. Finally, Zahid’s determination, his promise to always wear a helmet and ride safely, helped convince his father.

The Day We Walked into the Showroom

On a bright day in May, I got a call from Zahid asking me to accompany him and Majeed Uncle to the Yamaha Showroom in Batamaloo, Srinagar. We reached the showroom, and the board there read “The Destination.” It is an authorised Yamaha Showroom in Batamaloo, Srinagar.

The first bike that caught our eyes was the Yamaha R15. Pictures didn’t quite do it justice. The sharp fairing, aggressive stance, and race-inspired design made it look like it belonged on a track rather than a city street.

As we walked around the showroom, we also spent some time checking out the Yamaha FZ Hybrid. Unlike the R15, it felt more practical, something that could comfortably handle everyday rides through Srinagar while still looking modern and sporty. Then there was the Yamaha XSR. It stood out immediately. While most motorcycles around it looked futuristic, the XSR carried a retro charm that felt refreshing. It looked like a motorcycle built for riders who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

But Then, There Was the Yamaha MT-15 V2

One look at it and we knew it was the one. It offered everything we wanted: excellent mileage, a 155cc engine, an aggressive design, and great performance. It was practically a naked streetfighter version of the R15. We could picture ourselves riding it all around the city, and that is exactly what we did.

The Memories That Followed

We got it home and ever since that day, from riding to tuition every day, to sneaking out of our school, planning random trips to Asatnmarg and coming back before the clock hits 3 o’clock, the three of us — Zahid, me and his motorcycle, of course — have shared some of the best memories of our lives.

Perhaps one day, these very memories will convince our children to buy their first Yamaha, ride through the city they call home, and experience the same freedom, adventure, and friendship that made our youth so memorable.
